Echoes of the Sublime
In assembling this portfolio, my intention is to present a cohesive body of work that bridges fine art photography with practical design applications. By showcasing both sublime landscapes and diverse design projects, I would like to highlight my exploration of both grand and intimate perspectives.
The portfolio is divided in three parts : fine art work, design photography work, and short films.
The Sublime in my fine art practice
The sublime, as theorized in the 18th century philosophy, is characterized by the overwhelming power and grandeur of nature, evoking both awe and a sense of our own insignificance.
These images capture the vast, often intimidating beauty of the natural world, highlighting the contrast between the serenity of the landscape and the intense emotions it inspires. By putting someone in the frame, such as a silhouette, I aim to immerse the viewer into the picture. Immersion is an important concept to me and I wish to inspire the viewer to see himself in the mountains or on the beach I captured.
The track, the road, or the path, are objects I use to suggest a feeling of self-discovery and inner growth.
Photo editing and post-production are processes I really enjoy, and by choosing desaturated and soft tones I am trying to emulate the oil paintings of Caspard David Friedrich.
The first three photographs were part of an exhibition called Landscapes of New-Zealand I held in Raglan in 2021. It was a series of six of my bests photographs I had the chance to capture during my travels from 2019 to 2021.
Visual Narratives in Design
The following section showcases a selection of some of my work as a self-employed photographer.
This section includes a diverse range of projects, from product photography and events to food photography and portraits.
The inclusion of moody portraits and festival crowds aims to complement the sublime theme by showcasing the emotional depth and human experiences that connects with my fine art photography.
These works reflect my versatility as a photographer and my capacity to convey various visual narratives.
This photograph is part of a portrait series taken just before the subject’s departure from New Zealand. Blue tones were intentionally used to evoke a sense of melancholy. The flat, mirror-like water enhances the introspective quality of the image, capturing the quiet tension between personal transition and the stillness of the surrounding landscape.
This black-and-white photograph captures the hands of a crowd during a festival. I used a monochrome palette to give a nostalgic feel, presenting the image as a memory of the shared experience. This picture was posted on social medias after the event to reflect on the impactful moments of the festival.
This image of a wood panel, stamped with various labels like dates, weight, batch numbers, and coffee types, serves as the centerpiece for a coffee e-commerce website. Designed to reflect the coffee roaster’s personality, it conveys a crafty, handmade, and slightly chaotic atmosphere, embodying a deep passion for coffee. Positioned on the front page, it sets the tone for the brand’s authentic and artisanal approach.
This photograph captures a powerful moment during a concert by French musician Mathieu Chedid. Holding his Fender Stratocaster guitar above his head in a reverent gesture, M engages with the crowd. I waited tor the the lighting to switch, making the guitar stand out against a dark background, symbolizing the central role of music.
This food photograph features a plate of prosciutto on toast, created for a family-friendly restaurant. The vibrant colors highlight the freshness of the ingredients, while the arrangement of extra produce suggests both abondance and the chefs' expertise in preparing delicious dishes. The wooden table captures the spirit of the restaurant’s wooden structure in Raglan's Wainui Reserve, creating a connection between the food and the setting.
This photo, part of a series for an e-commerce website with an outdoor theme, showcases various products laid out on a wooden table, suggesting a wide range of choices. At the center, two hands seal a small package, symbolizing the brand’s handcrafted, personal approach, creating a connection between the business and its customers.
This photograph is part of a series featuring a family of three, with a focus on capturing spontaneous moments. I used soft tones to evoke a sense of nostalgia, and warm colors to highlight the joy of the scene. The slight blur in focus emphasizes the beautiful chaos that come with being a single mother.
Echoes of Places - Short films
This section of my portfolio features two short films that highlight my reflective approach to storytelling, capturing the essence of both landscapes and the personal connections people form with their environment.
A Feeling of West Coast
This video was made during my travels in New-Zealand. My goal was to share what I was feeling while I was driving down along the West Coast of the South Island.
I selected the music to evoke a sense of wander from an unknown and exotic place, while the colors of the ocean progressively shift towards a gold sandy tone, which by evoking a desert, reminds the emptiness of these locations.
The Spring
The Spring is a short documentary about François who lives in Marahau. As he cleans the spring that supplies his home, the film reflects on his intimate connection to water and his thoughts on living in New-Zealand, a country with such pristine nature.
